Party Like It's 2021

That new card smell.

After reports of elevated prices for hobby boxes and cases and difficulties buying online during release day, I wasn't sure when I would see my first 2021 Topps cards. I even missed out on the case break that I normally buy into due to unfortunate timing, but considering the prices I may have dodged a bullet there. I finally made it through the labyrinth that is the Topps website and placed an order for two blasters on Wednesday (one for me, one for the contest winner.) Later that day, however, I managed to catch the Target employees stocking the shelves with new boxes from Excel Marketing at the very small store down the street from me and, without feeling like I was hovering too much, managed to grab a blaster to open that day.

Here is the first card that I pulled. Actually, technically, I might have ripped into the relic card pack out of habit, but we'll show that one off last. This is my first real hands-on look at 2021 Topps. I... don't hate it as much as I thought I would, to be quite honest. The nameplate is still awful, but the fact that this looks like a Panini Donruss design only improved with logos actually makes it a bit of a step in the right direction for Topps. I do like the team logo placement and the foil "70" Topps logo. I also like the hexagonal/honeycomb borders. Maybe it's just that the newness hasn't worn off yet? Maybe it's that I was suffering from extreme 2020 set fatigue? (There were way too many sets last year!) I know that I don't like the weird slanted lines and... yeah, the nameplate is garbage. I just wanted to say that again.

There were four Cardinals cards in the box including Paul Goldschmidt and Paul DeJong. Let's look at the others.

Kodi Whitley is one of two rookies on the team checklist. He was part of the huge group of players that suddenly were pressed into their first MLB duties after COVID-19 wiped out a huge chunk of the roster early on in the abbreviated "season".

Speaking of 2020 weirdness, one of my biggest gripes over the years is how Topps treats the backs of officially designated "RC" cards. Starting with 2006, the first year of the official "Rookie Card" designation, Topps gave the rookie cards a different card back with an emphasis on bio and just the most recent year of minor league numbers. The part that always annoyed me is that in most cases the player already had some major league stats logged, and those are always ignored. I would much rather see the wall of stats from the player's various stops along the road to the majors than a single line of stats. Ignoring their major league career that is already underway was my biggest pet peeve, though. This time, with no minor league season at all in 2020, Topps was forced to use their MLB stats - although it lazily keeps the asterisk under the "Club" name.

I'm going to continue to be curious about where the photos for these early 2021 sets are taken from. This is clearly from a spring training game as it features Yadi in a red uniform. There actually aren't too many red jersey Cardinals cards out there aside from various prospects.

Topps also did away with full stats on the back for a few years but wisely returned to it. As one of the longest tenured players in the game, I figured Molina's card was a good one to check. Yes! Full stats!

I heard some complaints about the 'RC' logo placement, but I'm not impressed with how this Future Stars stripe was squeezed in here. If you couldn't tell, there seems to be heavily applied filtering effects used on all of these photos, making many of the player photos look like they're Photoshopped into different uniforms, even if they're not.

The Home Run Challenge inserts pretty much look the same. They're very bland, but I guess you shouldn't expect much out of what's essentially a contest card.

Here's Gleyber Torres on a 70 Years of Topps tribute card, which pays tribute to past sets. It's truly a bold and unexpected move for Topps.

I assumed this was from the same insert set as the Torres card above. I was wrong.

I flipped the card over and it looks like another card. Apparently these are "Double Headers" and fall at 1 in 30 blaster packs.

Gold parallels are also a tough pull this year, as it takes roughly four blasters to get one. Since the numbering didn't go up substantially (2021 copies, naturally), you don't really have to be a math wizard to realize what this means. Topps printed a ton of this set! We are sliding closer to junk wax era territory here, and I'm here for it.

Speaking of numbering, I was very happy to see the classic gold foil stamping of the serial numbers have returned for these. Although the gold border on the front of the card looks a lot more like copper to me, this is a nice touch.

We've come up on 1986 for the continuation of the Topps 35th Anniversary inserts. While I may already made fun of the reuse of old designs in this very post, the 1986 set gives me the most feelings of nostalgia as it was the first packs that I ever opened. It hasn't been reused nearly as much as other Topps designs of the '80s, although it has already appeared in Archives once. I think they did reasonably well with the fonts here, although Posey's card is the only one I've seen in hand so far.

On the other hand, Topps also saw fit to pay tribute to the 1952 set for at least the 381st time. These are a one-per-pack retail exclusive that replaced last year's Turkey Red inserts. It looks like there's only 50 on the checklist this time instead of the 100 Turkey Red cards from 2020 Series 1.

I would flat out be dismissive of these, but their thicker card stock gives it more of a Heritage feel to me than the other inserts.

Of course, there are also Chrome versions of these. This is a refractor, which makes me believe that all of the Chrome parallels are refractors.

Lastly, here's the relic card. This card is practically weightless, especially when compared to the relic inserts from the past couple of years. The patch appears to just be made of a chrome colored plastic. Even though they're the sheer definition of inessential, I had come around to some of the manufactured/pseudo-relics that Topps has cranked out. I just don't like this.

Wong Gone

Cards from the @dimeboxman help say goodbye to Kolten Wong, plus more players that are sticking around.

Every off season generally sees players leaving your favorite team, but it feels like it's been awhile since the Cardinals have lost a player from their core in free agency. Kolten Wong became the first significant player to leave from the Matheny days in awhile, as he comes off back to back Gold Glove award wins to join up with the rival Brewers. This Wong Big League parallel is just one of a bunch of Cardinals cards sent to me by Nick of Dime Boxes late last fall. While Wong's departure will certainly be felt, the Cardinals do see the rest of the core returning along with the huge trade for Nolan Arenado.

Dexter Fowler was recently dealt to the Angels to give other younger outfielders more of a shot at playing time, like Tyler O'Neill here. What this really means is the opportunity for Dylan Carlson to continue the big role he had at the end of 2020, but it should mean ample opportunity for others like O'Neill, Lane Thomas and maybe even Justin Williams.

Former Cardinal Stephen Piscotty shows up here on his rookie year "metallic snowflake" parallel from 2016 Topps Holliday. I've yet to figure out what a metallic snowflake is supposed to be, because these never really seem to have much in the way of metal in them. I guess they didn't want to call them glitterflakes?

Jack Flaherty is not yet under contract for the 2021 season, but it looks like an arbitration hearing will settle that. It will be interesting to see how Flaherty responds this season after only throwing 40 innings in 2020.

Nick sent no less than four purple prospect parallels from the 2015 Bowman set. Of the bunch, only Edmundo Sosa has logged any time with the big league club. Sosa seemed likely to be in the mix in 2020 as a utility player, but after adding Brad Miller to the roster it appears that he got squeezed out.

I'm a fan of these vintage World Series cards and really should own more of them considering how many of them feature the Cardinals.

My relative lack of interest in last year's Allen & Ginter set means that I'm not tired of the inserts yet. This Big Mac Longball Lore card still pops!

Nick also sent a quad-pack (a quad-laser?!?) of 2020 Turkey Red cards from the Update set. Most of my remaining needs are from the elusive Series 2, though I still need a couple from Series 1 and Update as well.

Contest Results and More Break Cards

Show up for the #CrackinWaxMailDay from @CrackinWax and stay to find out who won big!

Well, that was certainly a Super Bowl. Was it super, though? Not so much. Before we get to the results of the contest here, let's check out some more cards from recent Crackin' Wax breaks.

Topps Chrome Update is the latest retail product that I'll never be able to actually find in stores. I jumped in a break and ended up with two of the three Cardinals base cards in this set. These cards might be rare to find in the future, but I'm not sure if there will ever be a lot of interest in this set for the same reason that the regular Topps Update set will be repack fodder for years to come.

Speaking of retail products that I'll never be able to find, I also got ahold of my first Topps Holiday cards of the season. This is a larger set, so I still have some cards to track down for the team set. This is actually one of the "metallic snowflake" parallels, but the differences between these and the base cards this year are pretty subtle.

Stadium Club Chrome is so nice looking that it's difficult for me to avoid it. I should probably stay away from these breaks, however, because it's a very expensive way to acquire a couple of base cards. I did end up with a nice refractor for a player someone else collects that should end up fitting nicely in a future bubble mailer.

This was truly a box of firsts, as it was also my first look at 2020 Bowman Heritage. Once again an online exclusive, this year uses the 1992 Bowman design instead of an actual vintage design. I have no problem with using this design, but this really should have been called Bowman Archives or something else entirely. Jumping straight into the '90s all of a sudden goes completely against what the Heritage brand is all about. Let's hold off a couple more decades until we start thinking about doing this sort of thing again, okay?

As you might expect, this follows the usual Bowman configuration pretty closely, with the same batch of veterans and rookies in one corner and a larger grouping of prospects in another corner.

Add in some Chrome cards, give a few some color and serial numbers, recycle some photos and you've got a set! Congratulations, Topps! It's another inspired effort.

In all seriousness, these boxes seem like a fun break and the cards are well put together. I did end up with a couple of cards from the teams randomly assigned to me that will be headed for my trade boxes, including this black and white parallel of 2019 rookie Alex Young.

This one is numbered to just 50! I'll have to go and look up who Spencer Howard is sometime.

---

Finally, let's see who won the football contest. Here are the results (lowest score = best score) based on combined differential between actual points for each team versus the predicted points.
  • 1st - The Diamond King - 82 points
  • 2nd (tie) - Fuji, B_DogGy_geZZ, Jeremya1um, and Brian - 84
  • The Lost Collector - 86
  • Brandon L - 86
  • Jafronius - 86
  • bbcardsz - 92
  • Bo - 92
  • me - 97
  • Brett Alan - 102
  • Trevor P - 104
  • The Angels In Order - 104
  • cardboardhogs - 106
  • Wilson - 112
  • Nachos Grande - 114
So there we have it. Given that no one picked Tampa Bay to win it all, I knew no one was going to be particularly close. Instead, we had a bunch of people bunched up with some predictions that were pretty far off. If your name is in bold, please contact me and let me know your address so I can get a prize sent out to you soon. As always, thanks for reading and participating!

Super Bowl Super Giveaway

#FreeStuffFriday continues with some more football cards.

I thought I'd extend this week's Free Stuff Friday with some extra football cards. See previous posts for rules. There are also plenty of MLB stickers and a few cards leftover from Friday's post.

#1 - There's going to be a lot of Chargers I'm afraid.

#2 - Marino! And more Chargers.

#3 - Yep, more Chargers. I have more than what's pictured here, actually.

#4 - No Chargers here, but you do get the classic Tampa Bay Bucs jersey.

Go Chiefs!

Free Stuff Friday: Vol 13

I found some more stuff. #FreeStuffFriday [UPDATED 02/06/2021 12:01 AM PST]

I was looking through some boxes recently in search for something completely unrelated to the hobby and stumbled on some more stuff that I can give away here. Check out the rules here, but mostly - this stuff is all basically free as long as you've sent me something in the past year or so or plan to at some point this year. I guess it is a new year, after all. That, and don't be a jerk. When I was younger, I used to have a couple of out-of-the-package Starting Lineup figures for no apparent reason (they might have been gifted). One was my basketball nemesis (Michael Jordan) and the other was Kirby Puckett. I'm pretty sure the figures themselves have been tossed, but I found the cards recently. The Jordan is in rough shape but apparently people still pay money for '80s beat up Jordan cards (not that I'm really looking to sell any cards.) The Puckett card is in nice shape, though. It's up for grabs. As always, click or tap on the image to make it larger. CLAIMED

There are also two complete sets of this McDonalds "Sports Tips" Jordan set. I have no idea how these were distributed (magazine? newspaper?) I can tell you that these are not in perfect shape, but I have two complete sets of these if anyone wants a set. You might be able to make a nice mint card or two out of these. Both my copies of #8 have creases in them, but the rest of those sheets look good. The other sheets have some weird indentations on them but no full on creases. CLAIMED x2

I didn't think I had any more of these old SI For Kids sheets, but then I dug this one up. It's in rough shape. It does feature a couple of Hall of Famers and a U.S. Olympic gold medalist. I bet Ottis Anderson really doesn't want anyone calling him O.J. these days. CLAIMED

I wasn't sure of a good way to scan this, but this is a 1991-92 Fleer basketball promo sheet that was inserted into Sports Collectors Digest. The cards have backs to them as well. This isn't in perfect shape, but it's in much better shape than the SI For Kids sheet. CLAIMED

Well, given that it's Super Big Game weekend, I thought I'd throw up a few football cards. If these are popular enough, I could add some more at some point in the future. CLAIMED: Allen, Sanders, Barber, Tomlinson x1 (one still available)

Finally, I opened a whole box of 2015 Topps Stickers last weekend and finished off my team set. There are 400 stickers in the box and only 301 in the set, so... do the math. If there are any teams or individual players that you want here, let me know. (I did mail off a bunch of Dodgers already, but the rest should be there.) CLAIMED: Angels, Indians, Rays

A Ginter-Heavy Grab Bag

Baseball cards and more from @30aweekhabit including some set needs.

Back in the fall I reached out to $30 a Week Habit as I had some extra football and Allen & Ginter cards to dispose of and was trying to clear up some space. I need to remember to keep doing this sort of thing, as things are still very cramped here making space a very valuable thing. In exchange, I got back a nice package of Ginter cards that I actually did need, plus a few other things.

You can never go wrong with a card of The Big Hurt, even if it is from his post-playing days. If I had been into fantasy baseball back when Thomas was with the Sox, I'm sure I would have wanted to draft him high.

Here are some of the minis that were included with the package. We've got a comedian, a couple of current players, some postal history and a guy on the outside of the Hall of Fame.

There were Cardinals cards to be found as well, which is apt because this is a Cardinals blog after all. These are a couple of green parallels from the 2019 Gypsy Queen set. GQ is usually one of the earlier drops in the Topps release calendar, so I would imagine we'll be seeing the 2021 version soon enough.

Lastly, I was surprised with this Juwan Johnson parallel from the 2020 Score football set. Johnson got into a few games with the Saints this season and caught a few passes. Let's hope that even bigger things are ahead for him.
