The very excellent Number 5 Type Collection recently held a little contest/survey where entrants were to name their favorite name of a September call-up player. I chose Adron Chambers, who has been a late season call-up the past two seasons. Chambers is now on the postseason roster primarily for his speed, though he solidified his spot as a late game defensive replacement for a somewhat beleaguered Matt Holliday during the team's September run. I won some vintage cards of the team of my choosing as was very pleased with the results, not that I wouldn't have been pleased with anything free. Tim McCarver, of course, is synonymous now with postseason baseball and the broadcasting that accompanies it. We're spared his special "skills" at the mic at least in the Divisional round as FOX isn't covering the playoffs until the NLCS.
I had to do a little bit of research to find out what this next card was from, but I shouldn't have looked any further than the blog where it came from. Burleigh Grimes pitched for a number of different clubs in his spitballin' career, and I'm pleased as punch to receive a card in great shape from a '70s oddball set.
This card is fantastic - a Ken Reitz rookie card in great shape. I'll selectively ignore the other players for now. McNulty is clearly airbrushed, but I'm too excited about Reitz to care right now. I did save a couple of cards not pictured here for future Airbrushed Fridays posts.
Finally, I was a bit hesitant to admit that I never knew Don Larsen, he of World Series Perfect Game fame, was a Cardinal at one point. Well, it turns out that he wasn't. He actually broke into the bigs with the St. Louis Browns, and as is the case from time to time I ended up with an extra Browns card. This is a pretty cool oddball sized card from a Hoosier set. I might be convinced to give this up for something else intriguing.
Glad they arrived safely! Good luck to Adron Chambers and his StL teammates in their title defense.
