All We Can Do is Wait

I could complain about being sick of hearing about Albert Pujols contract talks. I could say that I'm frustrated and that I can't wait for things to be settled. But these few days leading up to "the deadline" are absolutely nothing compared to the circus that awaits and the annoyances that will go with every game and every ounce of coverage of the Cardinals this season if this thing goes unsettled into the season. I still think a deal will get done sooner rather than later, but if it doesn't, this could be an extremely annoying season. That's not to mention that distracting contract talks rarely translate to positive results on the field. I won't lose any sleep over it, though. This fan need not to look past Brandon Roy to see the other side of the issue: the dangers of committing lots of money over lots of years to the franchise player with a murky history of injuries.

On another note, I thought I'd take this opportunity to show off a few cards picked up at a local card show about a week back. I have no idea what's going on in this card, an apparent Sportflix spinoff, but it's making the people who invented the X-Fractor look rather well grounded.

Hey, it's my first Perfectos card! I didn't really know there was such a thing. And just to further prove my ignorance, I didn't actually know (or probably forgot) that the namesake of the Cy Young Award once pitched for the predecessor to the Cardinals franchise. As far as the Cardinals binders go, I say yes to Perfectos and no to Browns.

Heads up! Pitchers and catchers have reported. Seeing this picture made me happy tonight after such a gloomy day in Portland.

I believe this Ray Lankford card came out of a 25 cent bin. It's from 1998 Topps Gallery and is numbered to 250, which in 1998 is probably more like being numbered to 25.

I went on a bit of an Edmonds binge after the news that he accepted a non-roster invitation to Cardinals spring training this year. While he's yet to appear and take a physical, I'm really hoping he makes the team even if logic dictates it might not be great news for some of the younger outfielders. I'm letting the irrational fan in me take over. By the way, this is a pretty awful looking jersey card design, but I love it anyway.

Finally, a cool buck netted me a Topps base Matt Holliday rookie card. Here's to hoping he gets to continue to team up with a certain first baseman for years to come and not just this year.

  1. You do realize that the Cardinals were known as the Browns in the 1890's, right?

  2. Chris Harris informed me last week that the '95 UC3 cards were a Pinnacle issue that tanked. UC3 appeared again as a Sportflics subset in 1996 and then vanished.

  3. I do realize they were the Browns, but I choose not to acknowledge it because it just makes things more confusing.

The Ozzie card says "Sportflix, a Pinnacle brand" on the back, so I decided they were Sportflix. Or Sportflics. Whatever.
