Ultra Pro Falls on Hard Times

I spotted this little number in the baseball card aisle at one of the more notorious big box stores. It looks like Ultra Pro is repurposing some of its trading card pages to try to cash in on the Extreme Couponing fad. This just strikes me as hilarious and just a tad bit ill-conceived. Even if you were a coupon fiend, does it seem convenient to have your coupons in a binder trapped inside these static-filled pockets? Is there a continuous need to keep your coupons protected against damage? Is that woman on the front of the package going to drop her baby in a coupon-induced frenzy?

I don't remember the price of this item any more (I didn't buy one), but I don't remember it being a terrible value were someone to need this for its intended purpose - protecting cards. Perhaps Ultra Pro was having a hard time selling some of its non-standard sized pages and were looking for another way to move some product. Who knows?

  1. You would be surprised. I have seen extreme couponers carrying around binders full of coupons. The ones I've seen have been filled with the full-page pockets - and, yes, waiting for them to pick out and sort through is both frustrating and entertaining. I could see them using the varied sizes for their obsession... Oh, the humanity!

  2. I've seen those used by some of those obnoxious women on "Extreme Couponing".

  3. I believe those packages run $4.99. I've seen those women w/ their binders full of coupons. I've seen mom's sending their kids down the card aisle to buy these.

The thing that bothers me the most is the kids fetching these for their mom didn't even look up at the trading cards.

  4. The nine pocket sheets for cards are really popular among the couponing community - I did some 'fun' research on collecting supplies and on couponing forums I've stumbled upon, getting the nine pocket sheets for 'baseball cards' seems like the number suggestion to start out.

  5. I almost bought one of those the other day. I was thinking about putting all my oddsized Virdons in them. After researching it a bit I decided I would only be able to use about half of them so I didn't buy it. I think I just need to just find a package of 2 card pages instead.

  6. My wife uses them for her coupons. But only to store them at home, she doesn't carry the whole binder to the store. She clips all kinds of coupons, but she only uses the ones for the stuff we actually need. We don't have shelves and shelves of stuff that we bought just because we had a coupon. Don't want you to think we are that kind of freaks. But they really do help her keep them organized.

  7. Thinking about coupons in general, I've always wondered if the "cash value 1/100 of a cent" clause in the fine print of most of them meant anything. Does any couponer bring 500 coupons like that exact one to the register for, like, a nickel?
