Up For Grabs: Dave Winfield

Dave Winfield once killed a seagull with a baseball. He was famously drafted by four professional teams in three sports, one of which (football) he didn't even really play. He's also someone who was a Yankee stalwart in a period of my youth where I worshipped Yankee stalwarts, so I've always been a little guilty of overvaluing his status in baseball. At the very least, I'm sure I've overvalued his cards. Not coincidentally, he's the latest to get the boot from my binders (everyone is aside from the few players listed on the sidebar) and the full list of cards I have available follows at the end of the post.

The 1984 Fleer design is not one that has held up for me over the years. I wonder why. We used to treat it with such reverence, like it was vintage Topps or something. Weird.

We didn't have a Woolworth's in town and we still don't. I'm not sure those old-timey drug/variety chains exist anymore. Our equivalent was a J.J. Newbury's store. Now we have bright and bland corner drug store chains like Walgreen's and Rite Aid.

I seem to have bought a surprising amount of 1990 Leaf for someone with little funds in those days. Those things were expensive!

This is a Baseball Cards Magazine cut-out. I actually have quite a few uncut strips like this from the early '90s Krause magazines that I don't know what to do with. If I were to cut them, my steady hands would make them look worse than a 3rd grader's work, I'm sure.

These holograms are amazing. I really should think twice about trading off my remaining 1993 Upper Deck inserts, considering that I have basically completed the set and the inserts are part of what attracted me to it in the first place. I do have two of these, though.

Great picture.

Ehh... this one's not so great. It's amusing, though.

  1. I'd be happy to take that Winfield hologram off your hands.

  2. The hologram gone (dang! Nice grab, Night Owl!), I'd be happy to lift a few of these from you, what with being a Padre collector 'n all. Being fresh back at our hobby after, eh, about a 20+ year hiatus, I may not have a ton of what you need, but I've got a few things lying around here.
